Summary of Multiple Intelligences

According to Howard Gardner

1. Logical-Mathematical:  You like to work with numbers, you think logically and operate with reason or you complete numerical sequences explaining the logic.  This intelligence is most often associated with scientific and mathematical thinking.

2. Linguistic-Verbal:  You use words effectively, orally or in writing. You also enjoy listening or you like to read, recall words once memorized, do word puzzles and/or listen to a lecture and remember what was said.  Writers, poets, lawyers and speakers are among those having high linguistic intelligence.

3. Musical:  You enjoy experiencing and/or performance in any form of music or you hum, whistle, sing, play music while doing work or relaxing.  It encompasses the capacity to recognize and compose musical pitches, tones, and rhythms

4. Spatial:  You perceive the visual-spatial world accurately, and you enjoy visual art forms and can graphically represent ideas.  You could probably draw a quick picture of the floor plan of your home or draw a map to your friend’s house, doodle or illustrate while explaining something.

5. Bodily-Kinesthetic:  You use your whole body to express ideas and feelings and use your hands to produce or transform things.  You display the ability to use mental abilities to coordinate bodily movements.

6. Naturalistic:  You recognize, categorize and draw upon certain features of the environment.  You probably enjoy spending time caring for the plants or animals you may have in your home or garden.

7. Interpersonal/relational:  You are a people person and have an awareness of other’s feelings.  You may also like to be with other people to do some kind of group project or game or have a lively discussion in order to come to a consensus.  Educators, salespeople, religious and political leaders and counselors all need a well-developed interpersonal intelligence.

8. Intrapersonal/introspective:  You have a good sense and appreciation of self, including one’s feelings, fears, and motivations.  You can remember a dream you had recently and probably enjoy spending time alone thinking.

Everyone has the capacity for all eight intelligences, but your preferences affect the way you learn.  It is important to realize the importance of exposure to all intelligences in order to push comfort levels and encourage growth.

The multiple intelligences approach in the Workshop Rotation Model for Sunday School isn't a fad or merely kid-friendly, it is calculated to take advantage of our student's God-given thirst for multi-modal learning.
