Backpacks of Love

Parishioners at St. Aidan’s established Backpacks of Love in 2012.

The Backpacks of Love ministry delivers backpacks full of non-perishable food and other needed items to homeless and at risk children and their families in Forsyth and North Fulton counties. Backpacks of Love serves 17 schools, Jesse’s House and an emergency shelter for adolescent women in Forsyth County.

Delivering food to families in an innocent-looking backpack is a way for children to retain their dignity. When the kids pick up their backpack on Friday afternoon on the way home from school, no one knows there’s food inside.  It’s just a book bag.  The social workers at the school make every effort to maintain confidentiality and anonymity.

Backpacks of Love volunteers commit to filling a backpack every other week and dropping it off at the church throughout the school year. The focus is to deliver non-perishable food that is nutritional and packed with protein — such as peanut butter, canned meats, stews, rice and beans, etc. Single-serving items that a child could open and heat in the microwave without an adult are also very important items.  Single servings of macaroni and cheese, beefaroni, and chicken and rice are favorites. Cookies and candy are not encouraged.

The Hunger Walk benefits the Atlanta Community Food Bank, which has helped more than 775,000 children, seniors and families in crisis with food in the past year. The Atlanta Community Food Bank (ACFB) procures and distributes over 60 million pounds of food and grocery products to more than 600 nonprofit partner agencies with food assistance programs across 29 metropolitan Atlanta and north Georgia counties.

St. Aidan’s supports Atlanta Community Food Bank through our team of adults and youth who participate in the Hunger Walk/Run, and through donations by individual donors and the Loose Plate Offering.  Details about registration/donation and joining the St. Aidan’s Hunger Warriors can be found by visiting the Atlanta Food Bank website. The team has grown every year and we would love for you to join us!

LifeSouth is a 501(c)(3) non-profit community blood supplier for more than 100 hospitals in AlabamaFlorida and Georgia, committed to meeting the blood supply needs of these hospitals by providing the highest quality blood components and services.

LifeSouth is a community blood center, meaning the blood supply collected from donors directly serves the needs of patients in the local community. The blood donated here will stay here for local patient transfusions.

St. Aidan’s partners with LifeSouth twice a year.  The mobile donation van makes Sunday morning donations convenient for parishioners, and supplies this life-saving resource to local hospitals.

For more information or to become involved in the Blood Drive please contact David Freeman or Becky Fricton.

In many developing countries, patients and individuals lack the most basic way to transport life-saving medications.  The Pill Bottle Ministry collects empty pill bottles from parishioners and mails them to a firm who processes them and forwards them to countries where people do not have access to pill bottles.

Please donate your discarded pill bottles in the collection basket to the left of the glass doors, upon entering the parish building.  This simple step can help deliver desperately needed medical care around the world!

For more information or to become involved in the Pill Bottle Ministry please contact Cathy Biondi.

Crossroads Community Ministries mission is “Empowering people who are homeless to progress on the road toward economic and personal self-sufficiency.” This organization serves over 4,000 homeless men, women, and children annually. Their services include providing a hot lunch meal Monday through Friday and a hot breakfast on Saturday, helping source Birth Certificate and State ID’s, Marta assistance for employment related needs, a special program for Guests with disabilities, mailing service, housing placement for women/children, and health care provided by Mercy Care. Volunteers enable CCM to keep the doors open year-round.

St. Aidan’s serves this ministry through its fantastically fun Sandwich Saturdays, contributing almost 5,560 sandwiches made by many dedicated and cheerful volunteers!  In addition, St. Aidan’s supports CCM through financial donations, loose plate offerings, and donations of socks.

St. Aidan’s donated $2,340.56 against a budget amount of $2,325.00. Of this, $277.30 was the match for the First Sunday Loose Plate Offering in January; $348.16 was to purchase 250 toothbrushes with carrying cases for the homeless clients, and 150 men’s socks, 100 women’s socks and 33 children’s socks; and $1,715.10 was used to purchase supplies for Sandwich Saturdays.
