Missionary Commissioning

We are commissioning two parishioners, Karen DeArmey and Joey Sargent, as short term missionaries this Sunday.  They will be joining members of several other Atlanta-area Episcopal parishes heading to Honduras next week to work with women and children at the LAMB Institute in Tegucigalpa.  The mission team will participate in the dedication of the new chapel at the children's home and school in San Buena Ventura, which takes place on the 10th anniversary of LAMB's ministry in Honduras.  Karen and Joey will also deliver a special gift made by our Sunday School classes for St. Aidan's sponsored child, Anita.  The gift is a picture book containing photos and letters from the Sunday School children to show their love and concern for Anita and the other children living at the children's home.

A Prayer for Missionaries

HEAVENLY FATHER, Whose disciples were commanded to go forth and carry the Gospel to all nations, we ask your blessing upon those who have been called to labor in the Mission field.

Let your Holy Spirit descend with such power that they may be encouraged and directed in their efforts; and Grant that Your Spirit may be made manifest in their ministry, in their hands and in their hearts.

We pray that you will watch over them and sustain them with health, patience and endurance as they do the work that you have called them to do, and that your Spirit will strengthen the endeavors of these and all missionaries who go into other lands.

Introducing NFCC Food Pantry "Item of the Month"

St. Aidan's has long supported North Fulton Community Charities (NFCC) with annual Brown Bag food drives and assorted food donations.  Now we'll be collecting food donations based on specific needs identified by NFCC.  This will help balance the inventory in the NFCC Food Panty, so they don't end up with tons of rice and no peanut butter, for example.  The "Item of the Month" will be listed in Parish Matters and eNews each week.  To donate, just purchase the "Item of the Month" during your regular grocery shopping, and drop it in the box in the Narthex at any time during the month.

St. Aidan’s Green Team

Green Team Tip

Indoor air pollution is a concern these days because our homes, offices, and other buildings are filled with more synthetic items, including air fresheners, cleaning products, upholstered furniture, carpets, fabricated wood items, scented beauty products and scented petroleum-based candles.  You may associate that lemony or piney scent with a clean kitchen or clean clothes.  But synthetic fragrances in laundry products and air fresheners emit dozens of different chemicals into the air.  Look for scent-free or naturally-scented laundry products.  Switch to mild cleaners that don't include artificial fragrances.  Stop using aerosol sprays—deodorants, hair sprays, carpet cleaners, furniture polish, and air fresheners.  Be aware that fragrance free may not mean scent free.  Let in fresh air.  Open windows so toxic chemicals don't build up in your home.

Recycling bins are here!

Recycling bins are located in the kitchen, by the drink machine and downstairs in the classroom areas for recycling paper, aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and other recyclable materials.  For information, contact Earl Bozeman at 404-486-9405 / sonnyb49@comcast.net.

How are you helping to save the planet?

The Green Team would like to know what you are doing in your home and community to help save our planet.  Please send photos of your recycling efforts, compost bins, rain barrels, etc. to Joyce Tripp Miller, 1205 Tuscany Ct, Alpharetta, GA 30004 or jtmiller120@gmail.com.  Please identify people who are in your photos.

Join the Green team!

The St. Aidan's Green Team meets the second Sunday of each month after the 11 am service; all are welcome to participate.  If you are interested in helping St. Aidan’s with its environmental stewardship (recycling and the like) please contact Father Rob at fr.wood@earthlink.net.

Passover Meal

Wednesday, March 31, 2010
6:30 - 9:00 pm
Burtenshaw Hall

Sign up online or in Burtenshaw Hall

Why are we having a Passover Meal at St. Aidan's?  In our January 3 Gospel, we read from Luke 2:41:  "Every year Jesus' parents went to Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover."  And in Luke 22:15 we read, "With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer."  Jesus chose one of the most sacred and the oldest Jewish celebration, a celebration of redemption, to establish His New Covenant.

What is a Passover Dinner? In scripture it is called the "Festival of Unleavened Bread, Pesach or Passover.  As the name implies, it is a meal.  It is a Jewish celebration that is over 3000 years old, and the Dinner is a Bible Study of the Book of  Exodus.  It is a Celebration like our Thanksgiving, where we share fellowship, share Love, share our scripture and our redemption, as well as our abundance.  It is a Ceremony, with rules and regulations that come to us through custom and convention.  It is a deep spiritual experience to participate in an ancient tradition that Jesus observed, and connecting it to our Eucharist.  While scholars disagree on whether The Last Supper was actually a Passover Dinner, they do agree that Jesus used the language, food and ritual of the Passover to help His disciples understand the meaning of His death in the context of their culture, and we will be celebrating The Last Supper at the conclusion of the Seder.

Who is invited?  All are invited, including children.  Since the dinner and ceremony will last from 6:30 to 9:00, there will be childcare for those too young of an attention span for that amount of time.

Each family attending the Seder Meal will be required to bring a dish that their Host/Hostess assigns to them, either Kugle or salad (recipes given). Sign up will be closed on March 7 in order to get the tables and food assignments arranged.

Disaster Relief for Haiti - The Challenge to Help

Thanks to everyone for their generous contributions to earthquake relief in Haiti.  We have raised $2,308 to date for Episcopal Relief and Development, with several families embracing the Challenge to Help by donating $100 or more.  Aid is now flowing into Haiti, but the recovery and rebuilding process will be long and difficult.  If you have not yet donated, or would like to make an additional contribution, you can donate to ERD online at https://www.er-d.org/donate-select.php or pick up an ERD envelope in the narthex.  You can also donate through St. Aidan's with a check marked "Haiti" placed in the collection plate.  Other agencies that are helping are the Red Cross ( www.redcross.org) or Doctors Without Borders (http://doctorswithoutborders.org/).
