First Sunday Loose Plate Offering

First Sunday Loose Plate Offering goes to The Drake House, a crisis residential assessment center for homeless women and children in North Fulton.  The Drake House was established to support single mothers and their children in recovering from homelessness while keeping families intact.  The Drake House provides short term crisis housing combined with an empowerment program designed to promote stability as the family works toward housing self sufficiency. The program includes life skills classes on topics such as job readiness, personal finances, parenting skills, and health and wellness.  For information on The Drake House, visit their web site at www.TheDrakeHouse.org.

Drake House Work Day - Saturday, May 15

Summer Mission Trip to Honduras

The next mission trip to work with the LAMB Institute in Honduras will be June 19 - 26, 2010.  Join the team to travel with members of several local Episcopal churches as they support the poor in and around Tegucigalpa.  Enjoy the opportunity to share God's grace with children at the residential home and live out St. Aidan's mission "To Know Jesus Christ and Make Him Known."

Mission trips to Honduras are a spiritual journey open to parishioners of all ages, including teens age 15 or older.  Team members become part of a “building” mission: building community, building relationships and “being” the Church.  The cost is $400 plus airfare.  Some team members use frequent flyer miles to offset the airfare cost, which runs about $700.

For additional information, contact Joey Sargent, jfsargent@gmail.com or 770.335.5244.

It's National Teacher Appreciation Week!

So, what a great time to thank our Sunday School teachers for sharing God's word and love with our children.  They do such a wonderful job of making Jesus Christ known.  Please use the paper provided on the tables in Burtenshaw Hall to write a special thank you to our teachers, or use this for writing a special Sunday School memory you may have from your childhood or youth.  Let's show our teachers how much we appreciate their time, talents and love.

Hikers, Walkers and Lovers of Nature

St. Aidan’s Spring Family Hike is Saturday, May 8th at 8am.  The Laurel Ridge Trail is a relatively flat 3.8 mile circular trail at Buford Dam.  It should be a fun hike for young and old alike.  Bring a picnic lunch if you want to make a day of it.  The trail is about 15 miles from the church (400 Exit 14) so it should not take long to get there and back.  We will meet in St. Aidan’s parking lot at 8am and leave promptly at 8:15am.  We should be back around noon.  Contact Jim Linthicum if you would like to meet the group at the trail.  To sign-up or ask questions, contact Jim at jlinthicum@yahoo.com or 404-983-3558.

St. Aidan's Annual Parish Picnic - May 23

Hamburgers, veggie burgers and hotdogs will be provided by the Parish. Parishioners are asked to bring a side dish or desert and sign-ups for each will be available this Sunday.  Please bring your own camp chairs and picnic/sports awnings.  Please sign up to help with set-up and clean-up as soon as possible.  We will also need volunteers to cook at the picnic.  Since Diocesan Confirmation is the same afternoon, so we need to know ASAP if you can commit to helping with clean-up after the event. Contact Cathy Biondi (cmbiondi@comcast.net or 770-886-6497) to sign-up.  There will be games and fun for everyone!  This is the perfect opportunity to enjoy food, fun and fellowship!

Please Note Your Contributions Clearly!

To make sure we properly credit your contributions, please make note on your check if your contribution should be credited to Lift High the Cross.  Without a check notation, we credit your contribution to your regular pledge.  If you write one check for both your regular pledged giving and Lift High The Cross, please note on the check how much of the total goes to each.  We appreciate your stewardship, and want to make sure your contributions are accounted for properly.

Church Door Locks

The Church door locks have been changed.  The new key fits these three doors: the side door by the sacristy and offices,  the patio door near the sidewalk between the buildings, and the front door leading into the narthex.  If you were previously in possession of a church key and still need one, you will be able to get one this Sunday or next Sunday, May 9th during breakfast or after the late service.  There will be a table set up in Burtenshaw Hall for key exchange where you will be able to turn in your old key and sign out a new one.  Call Donna Jones in the church office at 770-521-0207 to make other arrangements.  You can also bring your old key by the office during the week to receive a new one.

St. Aidan’s Green Team

This Week's Green Team Tip

Your baby's favorite plastic bottle is harmless, right? Nope.  It harbors the nasty compound bisphenol-A (BPA), which is linked to cancer, heart disease, and brain-development problems.  When you heat milk in a plastic bottle, it leaches BPA into your child's drink. Plus, it's definitely not eco-friendly:  BPA gets into the waterways and stunts fishes' reproduction and development, too.  Protect your baby and our wildlife by opting for a sturdy glass or stainless-steel baby bottle.

Recycling Reminder

Please stop and think before tossing your trash!  Please use the recycling containers in Burtenshaw Hall appropriately.  The tall slim cans are for clean, empty plastic bottles and aluminum cans.  The small cans in the classrooms are for clean paper.  The Green Team appreciates your consideration!

How are you helping to save the planet?

The Green Team would like to know what you are doing in your home and community to help save our planet.  Please send photos of your recycling efforts, compost bins, rain barrels, etc. to Joyce Tripp Miller, 1205 Tuscany Ct, Alpharetta, GA 30004 or jtmiller120@gmail.com.  Please identify people who are in your photos.

Join the Green team!

The St. Aidan's Green Team meets the second Sunday of each month after the 11 am service; all are welcome to participate.  If you are interested in helping St. Aidan’s with its environmental stewardship (recycling and the like) please contact Father Rob at fr.wood@earthlink.net.

Spring Harvest 2010
Three years ago we launched our Lift High the Cross campaign with much prayer and consideration.  Thanks be to God, we have had great success.  Together, the people of St. Aidan’s pledged approximately $1.1M to renovate the worship space and reduce our debt.  Our First Fruits offering in April of 2007 yielded more than $300,000 in contributions that were immediately placed into service for LHTC.  Since then, we contributed a cumulative $826,000 of our campaign pledges, as well as $81,000 in unpledged giving.  We have decreased our mortgage principal by approximately $645,000, built a reserve ($53,000), and improved our liturgical arts by enhancing the church with new window, new wood floors, altar rail, and paneling, and acquiring a new organ.

As we approach the three-year anniversary, we are giving thanks to God and celebrating LHTC in two ways.  First, on Sunday, May 23rd, we’ll celebrate and recap the three years during the Adult Forum at 10 am and later during our annual Spring Picnic.  Second, May will be "Spring Harvest Month,” with May 23 being the final “Spring Harvest Day.”  That spring harvest is meant to gather in all pledge payments and finish strong.  Just as a race has a final lap or a game a final inning in which a strong finish is important, so too does our campaign need commitment to the end.  A strong finish will allow us to reduce the remaining mortgage to $1.5 million—and manage that with our operating budget = and not have another campaign (which was our goal at the beginning of LHTC).

We are so close! As excited as we all were with our "First Fruits" celebration, we are hoping to finish with faith and strength in May. Please fulfill your remaining pledges this May, and, if you’re feeling particularly blessed, to make an unpledged contribution is always welcome. (We’ll be asking those who had not pledged over the past three years to make a similar one-time contribution.)

You may complete your pledge by:

  • writing a check and putting it in the plate on Sunday or in the mail

  • making an online payment at www.staidans.org

  • making a stock transfer at Wells Fargo Advisors.  Ron Jones is our account representative and can be reached at 800-606-1855 or 770-622-0660.  You may authorize your brokerage company to transfer your stocks to St. Aidan's, Wells Fargo Advisors #21055530, using DTC #0201.  Donations of stock certificates may also be made directly to the Church.

Thank you for your stewardship in this community of faith.  We have worked together to Know Christ and Make Him Known by lifting high the cross and working together for the common good.
