Emmaus
House Food Drive - One Day Only!
St. Aidan's will be having
a special one day food drive for Emmaus House this Sunday, May 16th.
Having stocked shelves is an ongoing concern for Emmaus House as they
work to support the poor in the neighborhoods of downtown Atlanta during
these difficult economic times. If each family at St. Aidan’s
brings a few items from the list below, we can make a big difference in
just on day! Drop your donations in the box in the narthex this
Sunday and they will be delivered to Emmaus House in the afternoon.
Items needed include:
-
Canned meats - tuna and
chicken (5 oz), beef stew, chili, Spam, Vienna sausage
-
Breakfast foods - large
boxes (12.25-16 oz) of non-sugar cereals, normal sized packages or
multi-packet boxes of oatmeal and grits
-
Medium bags or boxes of
rice
-
Boxed mac and cheese
mixes, dry pasta
-
Ramen noodles
-
Hearty soups
-
Jelly
NOTE: Emmaus
House
cannot distribute bent cans or food with expired dates.

Welcome
The Rev. Claiborne Jones
This Sunday we
welcome The Rev. Claiborne Jones Director of Emmaus House, our Diocesan
ministry to those in and around Peoples Town. Their mission is to be
recognized as a model of God’s compassionate community where people from
all walks of life work together joyfully to diminish poverty and its
broader consequences by striving for economic security, social justice,
dignity and peace, thus empowering and transforming hearts, minds and
wills. The Adult Forum at 10 am will be a time to present
their ministry and hear from other volunteers there, like J-P Richard,
Board member and parishioner at Holy Innocents’.

The
Rev. Rebekah Bokros Hatch to begin ministry at St. Aidan's on May 23
Many
of you will remember Rebekah from short term with us this last December,
January, and February. We are pleased to announce that she will
now be with us at St. Aidan’s every Sunday as Assistant to the Rector
beginning Sunday, May 23. Her faith, energy, and experience will
be a blessing to us!
Rebekah graduated from Virginia Theological Seminary in 2004. Most
recently, she’s served as chaplain at St. Paul’s School for Boys in
Brooklandville, Maryland, and as Associate Rector, The Church of the
Good Shepherd, in Towson, Maryland. She and her husband Tony, and
daughter Ruth returned to Atlanta in 2009, and they have recently
welcomed Elias, born March 27.
At this point, Rebekah’s role as Assistant to the Rector will be Sundays
only with some occasional pastoral care. Our parish budget and her
schedule with two young children put understandable limits on what can
be done. However, we have preliminary plans for the scope of her
ministry to increase a bit in the months to come to include more
Christian Education and ministerial responsibilities.
Please help to welcome Rebekah and her family (back) into St. Aidan’s
family.

St. Aidan’s
Green
Team

This Week's
Green Team Tip
Composting yard trimmings
and food scraps makes you and your lawn greener. Composting
represents natural recycling. Backyard composting of food scraps and
yard trimmings significantly reduces the amount of waste entering
landfills. Almost all food scraps, except for bones, meat, eggs
(egg shells are OK), dairy products and oils can be composted. Use a 2:1
ratio when composting. Mix two parts brown (dry leaves, small
twigs, straw, etc.) with one part green (grass clippings, kitchen
scraps, etc.). This 2:1 ratio provides the best mix of carbon
(brown materials) to nitrogen (greens). Composted materials turn
into natural soil additives.
Recycling Reminder
Please
stop and think before tossing your trash! Please use the recycling
containers in Burtenshaw Hall appropriately. The tall slim cans are for
clean, empty plastic bottles and aluminum cans. The small cans in the
classrooms are for clean paper. The
Green
Team appreciates your consideration!
How are you helping to
save the planet?
The
Green
Team would like to know what you are doing in your home and community to
help save our planet. Please send photos of your recycling
efforts, compost bins, rain barrels, etc. to Joyce Tripp Miller, 1205
Tuscany Ct, Alpharetta, GA 30004 or
jtmiller120@gmail.com. Please identify people who are in your
photos.
Join the
Green
team!
The St. Aidan's
Green Team
meets the second Sunday of each month after the 11 am service;
all are welcome to participate. If you are
interested in helping St. Aidan’s with its environmental stewardship
(recycling and the like) please contact Father Rob at
fr.wood@earthlink.net.

Mission Trip to Honduras
The next mission trip to
work with the LAMB Institute in Honduras will be June 19 - 26,
2010. Join the team to travel with members of several local
Episcopal churches as they support the poor in and around Tegucigalpa.
Enjoy the opportunity to share God's grace with children at the
residential home and live out St. Aidan's mission "To Know Jesus Christ
and Make Him Known."
Mission trips to Honduras
are a spiritual journey open to parishioners of all ages, including
teens age 15 or older. Team members become part of a “building”
mission: building community, building relationships and “being” the
Church. The cost is $400 plus airfare. Some team members use
frequent flyer miles to offset the airfare cost, which runs about $700.
For additional
information, contact Joey Sargent,
jfsargent@gmail.com or 770.335.5244.
