Nursery Guidelines for Friends of the Family

The nursery at St. Aidan’s exists to provide loving care in a safe, happy environment for our very youngest members. We consider it a ministry of the utmost importance and we are willing to work very hard at it. We ask your cooperation in following the volunteer guidelines to help us give the best quality care for all of our children.

  • Arrive no later than 8:15 a.m. (for the 8:30 a.m. service) to assist parents checking their children into the nursery.

  • Please make sure to put out the sign in notebook found in the nursery cabinet for parents.

  • Read the sign-in sheet to note any allergies or special needs of the children in your care.

  • Caregivers are asked to be hospitable and welcoming at all times and interactive with children, parents, and volunteers of the church.

  • Where applicable, children should bring labeled diapers, wipes, and bottle or sippy cup to avoid unnecessary sharing.

  • Please discourage toys from home from being brought into the nursery. They are difficult to keep up with and we can’t guarantee their safe return.

  • At all times, no child should be disciplined by physical punishment. Time-Outs, Re-direction or separation from the group should be used as forms of discipline.

  • If a caregiver witnesses another caregiver using physical punishment, or abusing a child, either physically or mentally, it is required that you report the incident to the Nursery Care Director, or Children’s Ministry Director or another church staff member.

  • If a child bites another child, or adult, the incident needs to be reported to the Nursery Care Director, or Children’s Ministry Director and the parents.

  • Tactfully inform parents of any hitting, physically abusive or disrespectful behavior, continuously displayed by a child.

  • The changing station has all the necessary supplies. It is imperative that hands be washed or sanitized after each change. Dirty diapers should be placed in the trash can and tied off, then placed in the dumpster upon leaving.

  • No child should be allowed to leave the nursery with a dirty diaper.

  • If a child does not settle down and continues to cry consistently for 12 minutes, please send a nursery caregiver to get the parents (or page the parent if they have taken a pager). Please encourage the parents to try the nursery again next Sunday!

  • If a child seems upset upon drop off and a parent seems hesitant to leave the child; offer the parents a pager. The parents can attend services and know that they are just a call away if their child stays upset.

  • If children are not drinking from their bottles or cups, place them out of reach of other children.

  • Due to various allergies, snacks are not allowed in the nursery and should not be served.

  • If the weather permits and there is appropriate adult coverage, children can go to the playground.

  • Sick children are not allowed to stay in the nursery. If a child becomes ill during the service, isolate them from other children and either page the parents or send another nursery caregiver to find the parents. The child will need to be removed from the nursery.

  • Do not release any child to any person that is not that child’s parent or guardian.

  • The top half of the door shall remain open at all times.

  • At least two adults shall be in a room at all times.

  • Please take trash to the dumpster at the end of the day.

  • Make sure all toys, especially those that have been chewed are wiped with a Lysol wipe and/ or sprayed with Lysol or equivalent cleaner - washing with soap and water as well if needed.

  • All toys should be picked up and put back in their appropriate storage location after all children have been picked up.

St. Aidan’s reserves the right to suspend, place on probation, or dismiss, any caregivers who do not abide by these guidelines.
