BSA Family Award

Have you heard of the BSA Family Program? It is a series of activities designed to help strengthen your family. All family members are encouraged to participate to earn the BSA Family Award. There are five categories of activities, and within each category there are several topics. Within each topic there are many activities. If your family performs one activity from two topics from each category, for a total of ten activities, then your family will earn the BSA Family Award. Over the next several months, I will be sending you a series of suggested activities from the various topics. Just keep track of what you have done. After you've completed one activity from two topics from each category, end me a message and your family will be presented with the BSA Family Award.

Here's the first set of suggestions:

  1. LEARNING THROUGH FUN AND ADVENTURE
    • Enjoying Family Fun...attend a fair or festival, such as the Renaissance Festival
    • Cultivating Talents...start a new family hobby
  2. STRENGTHEN FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS
    • Making Mealtime Meaningful...learn a grace for your family to use before meals
    • Showing Love...put together a family scrapbook of your summer activities, experiences, and mementos.
  3. DEVELOPING CHARACTER
    • Fostering Self Esteem...give the child a "Victory List" and help them write down their victories or successes, maybe from this past school year.
    • Accepting Differences...watch a television show or movie in a different language and see if you can understand the plot or the idea of the show. Then watch a television show with the volume turned off and see if you can understand the plot or the idea of the show.
  4. TEACHING RESPONSIBILITY
    • Being Prepared...as a family, assemble a first aid kit for the home and one for car.
    • Managing Money...make a list of chores and special projects that the children can do this summer, and assign a monetary value to them.
  5. HANDLING DIFFICULT SITUATIONS
    • Overcoming Obstacles...plan a special time alone for a child and a parent. This often helps a child open up and talk about problems.
    • Coping With Long-Term Illness...if someone in your family has along-term illness, discuss changes that may occur in your family.
