In his book Sign's Up,
Vick Vickery (1988) tells the story of a woman who backed her
car from a local hospital parking lot after a visit there. After
driving about three miles she becomes concerned that a small
car has followed her every turn. When she stopped at a service
station to get help she discovered that she had accidentally
hooked her trailer hitch on the bumper of the smaller car and
had unknowingly towed the car behind her all the way from the
hospital.
How many of us, as scout leaders,
have had a similar experience? We turn around and find a young
boy following us at every turn. What an awesome responsibility
we have chosen to accept...to be a role model for a boy striving
to become a man. The motivations behind our decisions to become
scout leaders are as varied as our numbers...perhaps we had an
excellent role model when we were young and we wanted to give
the same gift to other boy...perhaps we did not have a quality
leader as a scout and wanted to make sure our boys received better...
perhaps we were just looking for a way to spend quality time
with our sons.
Whatever your motivation to
be a scout leader, the legacy you build today can be a powerful
gift for the scouts of tomorrow. Certainly the experiences of
scouting are valuable, but it is the examples we set, the leadership
we model, the values we teach which really impact the lives of
the boys we lead. So, go ahead...look in your rear-view! I bet
you'll find boys who you didn't even know were there. Following
your every turn!

is glad that you have chosen to join us for The New Showando!
We have designed a new program containing practical elements
which will assist you as you lead your units. We challenge you
to look beyond the surface of these presentations to the subtle
messages within...and in doing so to grow as scout leaders.
